Os Gêmeos

Since starting in their artistic careers in 1987, when hip hop culture was introduced in Brazil, Os Gêmeos adapted American-style graffiti to reflect the bright, multicolored swirl of Brazilian culture. Due to the lack of decent spray paint, their first works in the streets of São Paulo were created with house paint and rollers, which have since become signature materials.  

Since then, the twin artists have expanded to paintings, installations and large-scale public art, all of which engage the energy of the streets, the mysticism of folklore, and the dynamism of Brazilian music and festivals. From schools to subway trains, Os Gêmeos' paintings can be seen all over the world. Their surreal style is immediately recognizable by its saturated color and expansive imagery, and is most clearly embodied in the yellow-hued characters that populate their works.

The ICA/Boston show will feature two custom-painted public murals by Os Gêmeos, as well as a selection of their paintings and sculptures. The exhibition was curated by Pedro Alonzo, ICA Adjunct Curator, and will be on view from August 1 – November 25, 2012.

Later this year, Deutsche Bank Brazil will sponsor a screening of a new documentary about Os Gêmeos.
