Rachel Granofsky 2019 Deutsche Bank NYFA Fellow

In her recent series, House Hunting, Granofsky uses materials such as paint, charcoal, and tape to create a domestic scene in her studio drawing directly onto the surfaces of assembled architecture, furniture, and household objects. The final photographs give the impression of being painted over or digitally altered, when in fact it is the space itself that has been manipulated.

Granofsky pushes the capabilities of the photographic medium to achieve a synthesis of the real and the imagined. The resulting images are both quirky and playful, their imperfect constructions purposefully evidencing the human hand and disrupting photography's ability to capture reality. Granofsky's work encourages the viewer to linger over details and engage in a way that is antithetical to the everyday consumption of digital images.

Deutsche Bank has supported the NYFA Fellowship Program and the selection of a New York visual artist annually since 1999.
