The opening ceremony for the exhibition “Free Imperial City of Augsburg: Centuries of Grandeur”, organized with support from Deutsche Bank, took place in the Moscow Kremlin
The exhibition has been supported at the highest state level – the project is being realized under the patronage of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
On June 17, 2009, the opening ceremony for the exhibition “Free Imperial City of Augsburg: Centuries of Grandeur”, organized with support from Deutsche Bank, took place in the Moscow Kremlin.
This exhibition project is unique as the inimitable flair of Augsburg, a free European city of the 16th – 18th centuries, with all its diversity, is presented in historical chambers of the Patriarch’s Palace and the Assumption Bell-Tower of the Kremlin, the very heart of the capital city of Russia. The exhibits include outstanding masterpieces by goldsmiths and watchmakers, porcelain and delftware, graphics and paintings, as well as specially placed sculptures by great Adrian de Vries.

The press conference, which took place on the same day of June 17, prior to the exhibition opening ceremony, aroused the unprecedented interest: attendance by 14 television channels as well as representatives of printed and electronic mass media highlighted the importance and uniqueness of this project.
The opening ceremony, started on the Cathedral Square of the Moscow Kremlin with the ceremonial guard mounting of the Presidential Regiment, immediately set the celebrating, parade-like tone to the whole event.
The list of welcome speakers included Mrs. Elena Gagarina, Director of the Moscow Kremlin Museums; Mr. Kurt Gribble, Oberburgermeister of Augsburg; Mr. Andrey Bousygin, RF Vice-Minister of Culture; Mrs. Emily Muller, Bavarian Minister for Federal and European Affairs; Mr. Mikhail Shvydkoy, Special Representative of RF President for International Cultural Cooperation; Dr. Walther Schmidt, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Mr. Christoff Trepesh, Director of Art Collections and Museums of Augsburg.
Speaking at the opening, Mr. Joerg Bongartz, Board Chairman of Deutsche Bank Russia, noted: “Deutsche Bank considers the support and development of culture as an integral part of its activities. For the last twenty five years we have been providing active support for cultural initiatives in Russia and cooperating with renown Russian and international organizations of such initiatives.
